Standing a few feet in front of a cramped black stage cluttered with countless lights tangled wires and juddering speakers the first band,’ a girl called Kate’ prepare for their set. Lead singer and guitarist. Michael Hamilton bassist and vocals Jack Benzie lead guitar Jake day. Alex on drums and Megan Thorpe on synth grabbed the stage.
Mike also known as ‘Mikool’ look alike to the gorgeous Paulo Nutini giving a salute on stage to the crowd followed by bassist. Jack Benzie with his punk attitude.
The electro indie band had the reminiscence of the subways with a hint of the Fratellis but made a lot more noise!! Already carving their way into the music scene with their ingenious hooks catchy melodies and bouncy took a ‘girl called Kate took the audience from tapping their feet to a dancing frenzy.
After the first band set a vibrant atmosphere it could only get better. ‘Ghost of a thousand’ a metal/hardcore/rock/punk band from Brighton owned the stage. Lead singer Tom Lacy guitar Andy Blyth and Jag Jago bassist Gez Walton and drummer Memby Jago.
This five piece band got the crowd hyped with their heavy chord structured melodies and beefy tunes mixed with Tom Lacy’s strained screamo vocals. Supporting bands such as the Lostprophets and appearing in Kerrang magazine these guys were smooth. Sounding similar to the Deftones early work there was no end of moshpits that I was tempted to dive into.
To top the night off the two piece Brighton and London band blood red shoes took to the stage with their funkadelic grunge/punk/disco/house music. These guys didn’t need to be introduced the crowd went crazy. Laura-Mary Carter vocals and guitar and Steven Ansell vocals and drums these two often likened to the white stripes played remarkably.
The duo made up of a clean shaven angelic looking lad and an indie queen are highly tipped to succeed with their new single ‘you bring me down’. They bring to mind the subways more brutal but not unbearable.
Their songs have some fab individual sections. One particular song called ‘I wish I was someone better’ was impossible to not fall in love with their simplistic and blatantly catchy tunes. Endorphins filling the crowd got them noisy and dancing like lunatics jumping in and out of moshpits arms and legs flying everywhere it was a massacre of passion for music.
Their music so damn catchy and the band were exceptionally tight that I could see the random person in the crowd popping their head up only occasionally to check that it wasn’t a record that a dj was playing.
Standing two feet away from topless Steven Ansell this little flirt managed to give me a cheeky smile while multi tasking on the drums and mic-watch out ladies! Blood red shoes Influences come from bands such as nirvana the yeah yeah yeahs and the Pixies. I’m becoming more and more convinced that they are one of the best up and coming UK bands I have seen this year and things are looking up for these guys.
Sitting by the edge of the bathroom sink. Laura-Mary was on the floor grasping her toe. It turns out taking her shoes off on stage was a bad idea as she got a little bit too excited! Although in pain she seemed genuine and polite as we made conversation.
‘Blood red shoes’ performance poured out such confidence and professionalism that I could only think that I should be seeing them in a larger venue. This band proves that rock stars are born… not made.
