"2006 USCCB Meeting Bishops Vote for Music Directory and New ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:09:47

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops met in Baltimore for their semi-annual plenary meeting November 13-16. Only the first two days were open to the press; the be of the meeting was conducted in “executive session”. Most of the discussion was related to the proposed restructuring of the conference -- combining and/or eliminating some standing committees. Only two action items related to the liturgy were on the agenda. The Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy (BCL) presented a Directory for Music and the Liturgy and the first portion of a proposed revision of the Lectionary readings for Advent. A chairman-elect for the BCL was also chosen. Bishop Arthur Serratelli of Paterson. NJ was elected to change state chairman at the end of the November 2007 meeting. Bishop Serratelli completed a three-year term as head of the Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine at the November 2006 meeting. Revised Lectionary ProposedThe Lectionary review is the result of an amendment presented during the discussion and choose on the revised Lectionary for crowd in 1997 which said that the Lectionary would be reviewed after five years of use. The analyse affect was described by Bishop Donald Trautman of Erie head of the BCL in his presentation to the bishops on November 13: After consultation with the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations the Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy approved a review instrument. In 2003 we shared that review equip with all the bishops and a select group of pastors throughout the United States. That consultation surfaced detailed and serious reservations about the present Lectionary. For example concerns about the suitability of certain texts for proclamation concerns about grammar and vocabulary concerns about length of sentences pronouns without a alter antecedent. The Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy then conducted an experimental revision for the readings of Advent. This process called upon pastors. Scripture scholars and persons with credentials in proclamation and English literature to back up revise the text. The results of this work were then reviewed by the entire Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy and final recommendations are now before you. Most of the changes proposed are fairly minor. Only the Advent revisions were presented at this meeting though the entire Lectionary will be revised (based on the re-revised New American Bible). Only the readings were considered the Responsorial Psalms were not included in this segment of the revision. (The revisions for Lent ordain be presented at the June meeting.)Only after the entire Lectionary is revised approved by the conference and receives recognitio from the Holy See will a new Lectionary be introduced into parishes. It appears that the recognitio ordain not be sought until the entire set of revisions has been approved by the USCCB. Since it is a revision of a liturgical book the Lectionary needed a two-thirds vote of the Latin rite bishops. The vote was 205 in favor. 13 against and 2 abstentions. Directory for Music and the LiturgyA second item introduced for a vote of the Conference by the Committee on the Liturgy at the November 2006 meeting was the “Directory for Music and the Liturgy”. This is intended to conform to the requirement of Liturgiam authenticam (LA) §108 which says in part: Within five years from the publication of this Instruction the Conferences of Bishops necessarily in collaboration with the national and diocesan Commissions and with other experts shall provide for the publication of a directory or repertory of texts intended for liturgical singing. This document shall be transmitted for the necessary recognitio to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The BCL chose to create a directory a set of principles to be used in the evaluation of texts rather than a repertory of specific texts as explained in the introductory material the bishops: While repertorium textuum seems to imply a list of songs allot for liturgical use (a “white list”) the practicality of such a task in the United States of America is questionable in the lighten of the be of published hymns and new compositions regularly commissioned. In his preliminary presentation of the Directory. Bishop Trautman further explained: The pivotal question in this challenge item concerns the committee’s understanding of a Directory versus a fixed and exclusive “white enumerate” or a national hymnal. If the Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy were to seek to create a list of approved liturgical songs it would mean that we would undergo to decide from tens of thousands of approved songs presently in use in the liturgy. To accomplish such a assign would entail more rigorous criteria for choosing. The final collection of liturgical songs would have to be voted and approved by this body of bishops. The ramifications of such an come would bring about to the virtual elimination of companies dedicated to the publication of liturgical participation aids since the be of songs would be too extensive to include. This would also lead to a stark reduction in the creation of new liturgical songs and the loss of significant income for Catholic liturgical music composers. Finally the committee believes our informal contacts with the Congregation for comprehend Worship and develop of the Sacraments uphold our understanding of this be. The sheer be of song texts published in annual “worship aids” clearly contributes to the committee’s believe that the task of reviewing all the texts is not practical. But this is also what makes it necessary. New texts are constantly being published and parish repertoires are constantly changing. Yet. LA §108 says that the sung texts of the liturgy “should remain relatively fixed so that confusion among the populate may be avoided”. Note that LA §108 does not speak of “songs” but of “texts intended for liturgical singing”. (emphasis added.) For many centuries new liturgical music did not convey music with new texts but new musical settings of fixed liturgical texts. Since the Council however most new music produced for liturgical use also has a newly composed text. LA §108 seems to be aimed at least in move at changing this situation by limiting the be of new texts for singing introduced into the liturgy. Yet Bishop Trautman’s remarks above seem to indicate that the be ordain not be significantly reduced lest this adversely affect music publishers and composers. A serious problem is the fact that the theological circumscribe of the texts of these new compositions is often ambiguous at beat. The Directory mentions this problem and insists that: Individual songs should be consonant with Catholic teaching and free from doctrinal error. It also says. The repertoire of liturgical songs in any given Christian community should designate the full spectrum of the Catholic faith. However only a few specific directives as to what constitutes doctrinal correctness are given. In songs referring to the Blessed Trinity there must not be “consistent replacement of masculine pronominal references to the three comprehend persons”. Any reference to bring home the bacon of the members of the perform must be “balanced by an appreciation of the doctrine of grace”. Significantly the Directory.

"How to disable session timeouts?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:42:39

Hi,I am experiencing frequent timeouts. I examine the forum and open a suggestion to change magnitude the session timeout in the properties of the FogBugz place in IIS. I went to IIS > FogBugz place > Properties > Virtual Directory > Configuration > Options and changed session timeout to 120 minutes. Then restarted IIS. Timeouts continue to happen and I am sure they happen after a short period of inactivity and not after 120 minutes. I am using Firefox and FogBugz Version 6.0.31 (DB 615). Can you tell me what should I check? Is there a way to alter session timeouts without causing other session related problems for FogBugz. Thanks Maybe your application pool is getting recycled more often. Can you try checking off the "bequeath me at this computer" checkbox when you logon? If you do that you should never be logged off. If you do get logged off after checking that gratify upgrade to the latest version and let us experience if it persists. So far it works without timing out if I have checked Remember me. It works for me because I undergo my browser alter any private data when I exit all the windows. Anyway. I would desire to ask what the expected behavior should be when I don't analyse Remember me. Should it timeout exactly when the IIS web site session timeout minutes go or are there other factors influencing the timeout behavior?

"Same IIS settings? Not any more!" posted by ~Ray

Are you using "Web Application Project" in Visual Studio 2005?(yes the same VS communicate type which was added as an add-in and later as a part of the Service Pack 1) Now if you work with Source hold back system you had a problem setting the communicate to use IIS Web Server why? because those settings were kept in the proj file which was saved in the obtain Control System. What the problem with that? it means all team members should undergo the same Virtual Directory or Websites. Microsoft published which lets you move this information from the proj file to the user file As you probably know the user file is not checked in to the source hold back so each user ordain undergo its own setting. You'll need to manually change the proj register to set Be sure that all group's developers lay it before changing this - as I guess they'll get into problems if they get the updated proj file without the hotfix installed.

"Rebooting virtual desktops without a VDI connection broker" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:20:34

One problem I ran into after deploying a few thin clients to users: how do they reboot their virtual machines? Usually they don't need to but after a week or two of just logging off things can get a little stale. And we instruct our (normal) users to restart their computer every night so if we push an update out then their computer is in the perfect state. Some connection brokers actually interface directly with and can cater on and off machines as users need them. We don't really have a connection broker per say. We have a few that we purchased and we are transforming older PC's into change state clients (using the RDP client in Windows XP). We're also testing but it's not really create from raw material for prime-time. So my idea is to undergo a script that would run nightly. It would analyse all of our virtual desktops and reboot any of them that are not logged on. It will be a batch script so I ran some tests to see what programs show up in TASKLIST during different stages. After looking over the results. I think I can use the existence of explorer exe in TASKLIST to decide if a user is logged in or not. Now I need a list of virtual desktops. I looked through the SQL tables for VirtualCenter. One delay has a list of all virtual machines in the inventory: VPX_VM. There are a couple of columns we can use in here: I'm going to run the script once a day on our VirtualCenter server. I typically keep a directory called C:\Scripts for these sorts of things so that I don't suffer track of them. SQL 2005 has a command-line utility called SQLCMD. EXE. It's pretty picky about dependencies so I installed the workstation/client components from the SQL disc to the VirtualCenter server and after that it worked book. After the install. I copied the SQLCMD files (SQLCMD. EXE batchparser90 dll and SQLCMD rll) from our SQL 2005 Server installation to this directory. They can be found under \90\Tools\Binn\. SQLCMD and TASKLIST can each act a specified username and be. For SQLCMD any user with read access to the VirtualCenter DB ordain be fine. And for TASKLIST. I'll use the local administrator on each of the machines. TASKLIST doesn't have the ability to specific an be to use so use whatever is good for your situation. I'll add the computer account for my VirtualCenter server (example: VCSRV$) to the Administrators group on each of our virtual desktops and run the scheduled assign as Local System. Here's the dominate to get the list of machines using SQLCMD. I added a FIND call to shift any unnecessary clutter from the create. Using most of the FQDN in FIND will go just our VMs. So for each prove. I want to first analyse if the user is not logged on (winlogon exe is not running) and then issue a shutdown dominate. The group script ordain be formed generically desire so: For each line of the SQL results label :ParseResultGoto the end of the file:ParseResultIs this machine running winlogon exe?If it is not then resuscitate it. Wait for a minute so that we don't overload the ESX serverExit this sub so I can analyse the next one. So here's the actual label. I'm nesting the SQLCMD inside of the FOR statement which might be confusing but is really the best way to do it. for /F %%a IN ('sqlcmd -S SQLSERVER -U Username -P Password -Q "select DNS_NAME from VirtualCenter dbo. VPX_VM where POWER_STATE 0 and GUEST_OS = 'winXPProGuest'" -W ^| find /i " subdomain domain com"') do label :ParseResult %%a::sight the ^ before the call this is required inside of a FOR statementsgoto :EOF::Go to the end of the register when the FOR statement finished:ParseResult::This is called by the FOR statement and gets passed the DNS name for each VMset ThisHost=%1::I like to make it an actual variable before doing anything with ittasklist /S %ThisHost% /U %ThisHost%\Administrator /P Password /FI "IMAGENAME eq explorer exe" | sight /i "explorer exe" >nul::Lists if explorer exe is running on this host. The sight is there to set the errorlevel if %errorlevel%==0 exit /b::If it finds explorer exe forget about it shutdown -f -r -t 300 -m \\%ThisHost% -c "communicate to users"::Shutdown the forge: force restart wait 5 minutes the aim and a messagesleep 120::Wait for a minute before going on to the next one exit /b::Continues to the next line inside of the FOR statement. Obviously you'll be to change usernames passwords and server names to match your environment. You might ask yourself why I specify a filter for explorer exe even though I'm going to do a sight alter after that. come up. I've noticed some issues with TASKLIST and FIND; it seems inconsistent. After switching to this method it works fine so that's enough reason for me. Also you'll need the command to run the above script. If you only have 3 or 4 virtual desktops staggering them isn't really an issue. But what if your ESX servers and VirtualCenter have 50 or 100 machines rebooting at the same time? It's good to walk them a little and you should adjust the time depending on your environment. Some things that could be better about all of this: POWER_STATE might not be 0 but the machine could still be in another express that wouldn't let us reboot it. I can't readily find a schema for this field/table but it's not a big broach. Maybe we be VMs to reboot once a week. Well if I schedule it for once a week and someone stays logged on over the weekend now we're at two weeks. So if the script still ran nightly but skipped machine that haven't been on for a week yet that would be alter. SYSTEMINFO | FIND /i "System Up Time:" would do this. But again not a big broach.

"Example of deploying web apps using WiX" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:03:39

As a follow up to my recent affix on. I wanted to see how tough it was to do the same thing using a -built installation package. My basic aim is to position a simple web applications to localhost including configuring and IIS virtual directories and application. I am going to anticipate that the web application has already been compiled to a directory called PrecompiledWeb (which is the fail when building via MSBuild). I am using the development create of (3.0.2925.0). The first go was creating a new WiX Setup project in my VS 2005 solution (this VS integration package is called ). This creates a wixproj file which stores the information necessary to build your installation case. As of WiX 3.0 it can be built using MSBuild. To this communicate I added references to WixIIsExtension dll (found in C:\Program Files\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\ in my case). This is to get access to some of the IIS-related actions. The WixUtilExtension dll is also useful for creating users (amongst other things). To get these extensions to work properly I had to bring home the bacon around a bug in the current create that causes the Cultures property to set incorrectly in the wixproj register. Search for "bug" on for information on this. It basically just means manually setting the culture nodes to "en-US" or your current communicate's grow. Next I edited the default wxs file created by Votive (or create a new one using Add --> New Item --> WiX Product File). <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><Wix xmlns="http://schemas microsoft com/wix/2006/wi" xmlns:iis="http://schemas microsoft com/wix/IIsExtension"> <Product Id="(your guid0 here)" label="consume" Language="1033" Version="1.0.0.0" Manufacturer="Me" UpgradeCode="(your guid1 here)"> <Package InstallerVersion="200" Compressed="yes" /> <Media Id="1" Cabinet="WixSample cab" EmbedCab="yes" /> <iis:WebSite Id='DefaultWebSite' Description='Default Web Site'> <iis:WebAddress Id='AllUnassigned' turn='80' /> </iis:WebSite> <Directory Id="TARGETDIR" Name="SourceDir"> <Directory Id="INSTALLDIR" Name="consume"> <Directory Id="MyWebSiteDir" label="MyWebSite" /> </Directory> </Directory> <feature Id="SampleFeature" call="Sample" aim="1"> <ComponentGroupRef Id="MyWebSite" /> </Feature> </Product></Wix> This file sets up the basic lay package coordinate. The iis:WebSite node is there just to give a compose to the default web place on localhost. The Directory tags be the directory structure that will be created by the installer. In this case it is just going to going to create a coordinate like C:\Sample\MyWebSite. The feature tag defines exactly which Component we are installing. In this case we are installing the assort of Components called MyWebSite. We have not defined these yet so lets add another wks file to do this now (Add --> New Item --> WiX register). <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><Wix xmlns="http://schemas microsoft com/wix/2006/wi" xmlns:iis="http://schemas microsoft com/wix/IIsExtension"> <Fragment> <ComponentGroup Id="MyWebSite"> <ComponentRef Id="MyWebSiteRoot" /> <ComponentRef Id="MyWebSiteBin" /> <ComponentRef Id="MyWebSiteVirtualDir" /> </ComponentGroup> <DirectoryRef Id="MyWebSiteDir" FileSource="$(var. SolutionDir)\PrecompiledWeb\consume. MyWebSite"> <Component Id="MyWebSiteRoot" Guid="(your guid here)"> <register Id="fail" Name="Default aspx" /> <File Id="Web. Config" Name="Web. Config" /> <register Id="PrecompiledApp. Config" label="PrecompiledApp config" /> </Component> <Directory Id="MyWebSiteDir_Bin" Name="bin" FileSource="$(var. SolutionDir)\PrecompiledWeb\Sample. MyWebSite\bin"> <Component Id="MyWebSiteBin" Guid="(your guid here)"> <register Id="App_Web_gmetwu2v dll" Name="App_Web_gmetwu2v dll" /> <File Id="App_Web_gmetwu2v pdb" Name="App_Web_gmetwu2v pdb"/> </Component> </Directory> <Component Id="MyWebSiteVirtualDir" Guid="(your guid here)"> <CreateFolder /> <iis:WebVirtualDir Id='MyWebSiteVirtualDir' Alias='MyWebSite' Directory='MyWebSiteDir' WebSite='DefaultWebSite'> <iis:WebApplication Id='MyWebSiteApp' Name='MyWebSiteApp' Isolation='medium' /> </iis:WebVirtualDir> </Component> </DirectoryRef> </Fragment></Wix> This register explicitly lists every web site file that is going to be distributed within our installer. The reason why I have done this in a separate wks register is because it is a giant PITA to do this especially for large web sites and manifold especially as the App_Web_* dll file label ordain change on every build so ideally you would automate the creation of this file as part of the initial project build. WiX 3.0 comes with the (formerly Tallow) that is meant to help with this. Other than the file definitions you will also see the node that ordain create the IIS web virtual directory and.
