"USA Today Quotes Stephen Burd on Private and Federal Loans" posted by ~Ray

Student loans are often categorized as good debt because a college education is considered a sensible long-term investment. ... But it's important to understand that not all student loans are alike. Federally guaranteed student loans known as Stafford loans have fixed interest rates now 6.8% and flexible repayment terms. Any full-time college student regardless of family income can take out a Stafford loan. Private student loans which are often offered by the same lenders that provide federal loans are more expensive. Interest rates are variable so there's no limit on how high they can go. And repayment terms aren't as flexible as they are for federal loans. Yet despite these drawbacks private student loan borrowing has soared in the past decade. This year private loans accounted for 29% of all loans taken out by undergraduates according to a report released last week by the College Board. ... The amount of federal money that students can borrow is limited and those limits haven't kept up with increases in college costs. As a result some students who attend high-cost schools rely on private loans to pay for expenses not covered by their federal loans. But that doesn't entirely explain the growth in private loans. An analysis by the American Council on Education found that one in five undergraduates with private loans didn't first take full advantage of federal loans. So why do borrowers take out higher-cost loans? Marketing probably plays a role. Many lenders advertise private loans on television and over the Internet. ... In addition recent cuts in government subsidies have made federal loans less profitable for lenders. Consequently lenders may become even more aggressive in marketing their private loans says Stephen Burd senior research fellow for the New America Foundation a policy institute. ...

"Spider-Man 4 Gets a Writer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-05 02:09:16

A day shy of the expected and inevitable Writer’s Guild strike comes some interesting news. Sony Pictures has hired to pen the Spider-Man 4 script and while he won’t be able to write during the strike (although c’mon we all know writers are going to keep writing anyway especially if it’s a script they really compassionate about). Sony is hoping to channel the fourth film by 2009. If you’ve never heard of the man. Vanderbilt penned the insanely great Zodiac as well as some transport cram such as The Rundown. He also recently finished polishing up the screenplay for the Wolverine movie. I find it a little disappointing that Sony is rushing another Spider-Man sequel out so soon. I’m fairly confident that Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst aren’t going to reprise their roles (to be honest though. I’m hoping they end to - yes even Kirsten so they can finally kill her off and undergo Peter hook up with Gwen Stacy) which means they’re going to be starting fresh with a new direct. While Raimi comfort may be on board to enjoin (although I’m betting no here too). I’d say they should give the franchise a be for a few extra years especially with the sour taste Spider-Man 3 left in so many fan’s communicate. I mean. Raimi has been one of my personal favorite directors for years now and the movie was so bad and unfocused and sloppy that it even shook my faith in him a little bit. Some extra time between Spidey movies to acquire just seems smart - although Sony knows that no matter what they decide they’re going to alter a killing at the box office and they’re right - I’d be there opening day regardless because my inner nerd would never let me elude. I guess to get some discussion going if Tobey and Kirsten aren’t coming back who should take on their roles? If Raimi isn’t going to direct who should step behind the camera?
