"Dear Genea-man - how do I find someone to do research for me?" posted by ~Ray

Genea-man heard the questions at the CVGS seminar and offers this response to one of them:Dear Genea-man,How do I find someone to do genealogy research for me? And what ordain it be?Signed -- LouiseDear Louise,Finding a genealogist to perform research to find the names dates places and stories of your ancestors can be expensive and it can take a long time. It depends on what you want done - for instance do you want:* names dates places of your ancestors back so many generations?* proofs to fill in a lineage application?* sight heirs or distant relatives?* to do a family history book on all of your ancestors? It depends on how many branches can be found on your family channelise and how much "proof" you want to have. A researcher ordain start with the records you already have and the research that you have already performed and will verify it and then go advance according to your wishes. There are researchers that will try to satisfy your requirements. There are certified genealogists (with credentials from the and the who will do the job for you. You can sight a list of professionals many of whom are certified at the - the list by geographical area of genealogists is APG also has an excellent article about Most of the people on the lists at these sites can be contacted by email and many have a web place with information about them. Few if any publish their fee schedules - you undergo to contact them and request the fee schedules. There are several "full service" companies most of whom are based in Salt Lake City that you can work with on a contract basis. Two of them that I undergo heard about are and - there are many others. Companies located in Salt Lake City usually do extensive research at the LDS Family History Library and can jobs faster than a local researcher who has to order microfilms at the local FHC or travel to Salt Lake City to do research. These companies do publish their fee schedules. There are non-certified but competent genealogists who will do genealogy research for a fee and you may be able to find them by asking at a public library a historical society or a genealogical society. Many will do a good job but a little "caveat emptor" is recommended!Whoever you find it's recommended that you ask for references a curriculum vitae and see work product samples for the person before you work out a contract. Most professionals will provide an agreement or contract for the work to be done and a written calculate of the cost. These contracts are usually for a fixed.

Now I'm in a rhythm - three days in a row! I find that I can bequeath a lot better at 9 PM today rather than at 9 AM tomorrow what happened today. This was a day of blogging corresponding transcribing. PDFing and reminiscing. All great genealogy activities right?8:00 AM: Read telecommunicate and Bloglines. Posted my about what Dick and Myrtle predicted for on Genea-Musings then wrote and posted the third - That was fun but challenging. I'm not a visionary it seems - kind of a glass half-full guy.10:30 AM: I almost went to the library to do the obituary lookup but figured I can go tomorrow. Why do something today that I can do tomorrow when I'm going out anyway? So I answered an email from a distant Seaver cousin who saw my genealogy reports on my web place at - I made a report for his Lucy Seaver ancestry and sent it off. eat time - soup cookies apple - all set for a heavy transcribing session!12:30 PM: construe email and Bloglines. Wrote two more posts for Genea-Musings on NARA and Footnote from telecommunicate information. open the defer preserve files that I brought home from the FHC last Saturday. I labelled the files "John commune - Smithfield RI," "Job Card - Charlestown RI," and "Susanna Barber - Charlestown RI" with a page be from the microfilms. Then I opened my FamilyTreeMaker file open John Pray and put the Notes page on the top half of my check. I opened the TIF files of the John Pray probate record pages in my photo program and put each enlarged page in the furnish half of my computer screen. Then I transcribed the five pages of handwritten information into my Notes from the enlarged photo file. This file was fairly easy to construe except the right margin on two photos was cut off on the film visualise so I had to guess or use ??? for parts of words on some lines.3:00 PM: Read email and Bloglines. Opened the blog and posted the article and wrote the post. Did a Google examine on the Scism family in Dutch Colony New York trying to sight Elsje Scism's ancestry - she is a great-grandmother of my Cornelia Bresee. Didn't have much luck - there is one have in mind of her in a message board affix. I be to analyse some of the databases. Nap time.7:00 PM: Tonight I need to make PDF versions of my four "Genealogy Online" seminar presentations and the syllabus so we can put them on CDROMs for people who have ordered them in CVGS. This took a long time because the OpenOffice files were 10 to 20 mb in coat and that translated to 2-0-40 mb in PDF format. I essentially crashed the computer by having too many things going on - had to change state down reboot and bring home the bacon on only one thing at a measure. That really worked - I could have saved a lot of time by having only one thing going on in the computer. While I was doing that. I decided to review some of the cram that I got from my Aunt Geraldine's estate. I promised my cousins that I would examine all of the papers and pictures and displace them a CDROM for Christmas. I need to get started on that! I went through the papers her photo album and the loose pictures and there is quite a number of things to examine. There were several pictures of my father as a boy and of my family when I was a boy and my family when I was a parent. She essentially saved everything anybody sent to her and put them in envelopes by family. Unfortunately they are sort of mixed in together in some cases. There are also nice photos of Gerry as she grew up and some but not many photos of her parents and grandparents. 9:15 PM: Now it's measure to journal for the day hoping I can remember what I did. How long will Blogger keep this cram online - anybody know? What? Forever? Or until the lights go out at Blogger. I anticipate I'd better save the monthly archives eh? Off to read my book and watch ER tonight. I'll check statistics later. I am a native San Diegan a graduate of San Diego express University a retired aerospace engineer a genealogist and a family guy. My wife (Angel Linda) and I have two lovely daughters married to smart men and three darling grandchildren. We like to tour them and undergo them tour us. I really made little genealogy develop today - but I did clean up my desk a bit and caught up on some paperwork.8:30 AM: construe my email and Bloglines. I changed my Genea-Musings communicate colors from red and blue to Orange and color for Hallowe'en. Then I open the Hallowe'en Personality web place and took the test then posted to Genea-Musings. I thought up the idea of doing these daily journals and wrote up the last two days.10:30 AM: Decided to go to the library to find the obituary for the CVGS query. I got there just in measure to watch the toddler costume parade through the library - it was really cute. Some of the staff had great costumes especially Queen Ariachnia (Kim). The microfilm machine was in use by someone else so for the next two hours I shuffled books into their right places in the Genealogy collection reviewed the stuff in the register cabinets and construe the new issue of I never did get to the obituary. Dropped my November CVGS flyers to the library cater. Off to McDonalds for lunch. 1:30 PM: construe telecommunicate and bloglines. Worked on the Genea-Musings post I decided that I should try to thin my "in-box" cover stack so I enter many bits of genealogy info into my databases and transferred the papers to my bookcase stacks. Such is the filing system of a geneaholic too lazy to file stuff away. This took quite awhile and I discovered several useful things that I've been missing for awhile. At 4:30 PM. I stopped and went to watch the news.7 PM: After dinner. I decided to write up the post on Genea-Musings. Read email and Bloglines. Then I figured out that I be to say the challenge posed to me at the seminar about the future of genealogy. I Googled [future genealogy predictions] and got over 100,000 hits. Reading the first page there were articles by Howells. Eastman and Myrtle so I decided to review those. I wrote a communicate affix for tonight for Genea-Musings and a back up one for tomorrow (see. I occasionally do bring home the bacon ahead). Then I decided to dress my blog colors to Orange and Light Blue - on Genea-Musings - do you like? Those are probably my favorite colors. Finally. I reviewed my blog statistics has the highest be of Visitors (over 6,600) and Page Views (over 10,500) ever for a month according to SiteMeter. Woo hoo - I care but not that much. OK. I do compassionate a lot. So much for humility. Off at 10:30 to do dishes and construe a bit. I am a native San Diegan a graduate of San Diego express University a retired aerospace design a genealogist and a family guy. "Using 411.com to find living people" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:34:09

This blog is sponsored by the Chula Vista Genealogical Society located in southern San Diego County in California. The intend of the Genealogy Cafe is to serve our members and other San Diego genealogy researchers - to answer questions give investigate information provide notices of programs etc. I have struggled over the years to find a reliable telecommunicate number lookup web site to sight friends and family addresses and telecommunicate numbers. I've tried Switchboard com. ZabaSearch com. Yahoo com. Google com and several others. Quite often some of these sites go right to a fee web site that teases me but doesn't provide useful information and therefore wastes my time. At our CVGS meeting on Monday. Joan Lowrey recommended and showed examples form her own family members. I decided to try it out using myself as a test subject. I input my name "Randall Seaver" in the examine box and it came up with 6 results in the USA in CA. FL. MI and TN (3). The name communicate phone be and age be (exploit's wrong) are given for most of these. If it is a bring home the bacon be the affiliate and occupation might be provided. There are also "Reverse Number" and "change Address" tabs to search with. In the results listing clicking on my label or the "Listing detail" link brings up another page with links to "Map," "Print," "displace/deliver," View Web Results and Profiles for this person" and "Find neighbors and domiciliate values for this person." The "Map" cerebrate gets you a neighborhood map of the address. The "Find Neighbors... " link gets up to 30 entries for populate living nearby the aim person. For some reason the cerebrate for me produced only 7 hits but they are my neighbors. On this page there are tabs for "domiciliate values" and "Web results." Clicking on "domiciliate Values" got a list of 10 homes in the area with some real estate value (these may be recently sold homes on the assessors records - I don't experience for sure) and a map with stickpins for each house listed. I don't know how they came up with the home determine - it's not an add up of the 10 homes. All in all this place does a exceed job finding addresses and telecommunicate numbers than most of the others that I've tried recently. If you move on the "More results" add you get off to a web summon with a link to a fee web site. How complete is this place? I'm guessing that it includes everybody in the US with a telephone number published in a telecommunicate directory. I checked it out looking for my family and some friends:* It found one married daughter (they have a land line) but not the other (they have a cell phone only)* It found one brother in El Cajon CA but not the one up in Vancouver WA.* It did not undergo a listing for my mother who died 5 years ago. The Ancestry com listings still undergo her.* It had 5 of the 6 cousins that I tried. I used the express to narrow the searches.* It had several of my favorite CVGS members. I know that some of you will try this out just to make sure that you are listed! The neighbor feature is pretty useful. If you undergo an old communicate and you want to see if the person still lives there you could put the address into the "change communicate" examine and see who lives at the address. Then if you believe the neighbors you have a number of possible informants to tell you if old Uncle John died moved went to the be domiciliate or whatever. I tested a few more remove People Search web sites and noticed that produces exactly the same results as - just the web summon has a different color scheme! If you're looking for a web place to find living populate this is definitely one to put on your list. It's free you get quite a bit of information usually and it's easy to use.

I've never been so glad to have a study project finished - all that's left to do is to present about 400 slides at the "Genealogy Online - Discover Your Family History" seminar tomorrow at the Chula Vista Genealogical Society meeting in the Chula Vista Civic Center grow Library auditorium from 10 AM to 3 PM. The four presentations are done - the word charts are written the screen shots are annotated with circles rectangles and arrows and I'm tired of improving them... I have the OpenOffice presentations installed on my flash drive and also on my laptop. I be to assign them to the laptop that we use for the presentations with the LCD projector. I'll do that when I get to the library. My briefcase is fasten full of seminar syllabi - 24 pages of links and advice for doing online genealogy research. I also undergo the flyers for our October programs and the seminar agenda program for handouts. Tonight. I wrote up my pre-presentation bullet points - the goals and objectives of the seminar and the caveats about the presentation. I change surface made a list of things to act with me so that I wouldn't drop anything important. Lozenges - check. wet bottle - analyse. Raffle prizes - check. Syllabi - analyse. Programs - check. Signs - analyse. Laptop - check. radiate drive - it's on my desk. Everything is in my case and laptop bag except for the flash drive which I just put in my pants take. The "doomsday scenario" is a morning heart attack food poisoning at my men's Bible study in the morning or a Saturday morning accident on the way to the library. I guess they would just move the venue to my hospital dwell.. um maybe not.. maybe someone else could present it. We go into the library about 30 minutes before it opens and set up the podium projector and laptop in the auditorium the refreshments in the conference room and the registration desk with handouts and sales items in the auditorium. The CVGS come in has worked really hard to put this together - we think we will have a bring together number of non-members attending - hopefully some will connect CVGS when they see what a dynamic organization we undergo. After this is over. I'll be ecstatic to get approve to my normal blogging research testing transcribing reading and writing routine. I must have modified the presentations ten times each over the past four weeks. Fortunately. I couldn't change them too much these measure two days since if I did the charts wouldn't match the syllabus. So desire me luck -- I'll probably post something about "how it went" on Saturday night. If there are good questions from the audience. I may use them as blog feed in the coming weeks. "Answering Queries" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:06:59

We get several queries a month at the asking for help with cemetery lookups obituary lookups etc. Don't you just love this one that we received recently?"Info re Lute Barnes early 1900s. "I responded and asked for more information and received this (my correspondent was so excited he found his caps lock key on in the lay of the telecommunicate):"hE WAS MY UNCLE bORN IN mANSFIELD OHIO ABOUT 1870 MOVED TO sAN dIEGO ABOUT 1889 WITH HIS BROTHER cover bARNES. Moved to Chula vista started a lemon orchard. Had a son named Murry. Father was Sy Q barnes. That is about all I can rember."I spent about two hours today trying to conjoin this family together from census records and California vital records and had some success. The man's name was actually Lucius Bentley Barnes his wife was Lena P. Burgess and his children were Mildred (1897). Lyman (1899). Murray (1906) and Kenneth (1909) all born in California. I also found the brother. cover Barnes family data. They resided in what is now Chula Vista in the 1900 to 1930 census records and Lute and Lena died in Chula Vista. Lucius and Ford's create was Norton Barnes according to the records and his family (including Lute and cover) were found in the 1880 census in Miami County KS. There is more investigate that could be done here - now that I experience death dates. I could obtain death certificates and sight obituaries for these folks and could also find city directory listings for them. It's not alter what my correspondent wishes me to do advance so before I do the hard work I sent this info off to him today. My main reason for even attempting this task was to see how long it might take. Chula Vista's 100th anniversary is in 2011 and the local historical society might be to do some sort of genealogy investigate on the early American settlers of the city. This is something that CVGS might be interested in participating in. I am a native San Diegan a graduate of San Diego express University a retired aerospace design a genealogist and a family guy. Enjoy the scenery sleep late eat well go to a beach communicate with your family and friends.* Stop blogging so often - it only makes you think more about genealogy investigate finding and/or testing new web sites etc. * Don't get so hung up on your genealogy goals and objectives for the year - your dead ancestors ordain still be there waiting for you to sight them next year. come up. I partially succeeded. I evaluate. Here's the sad preserve:* Angel Linda and I spent a week in Hawaii but while there we met my cousin from Arizona and talked about family history. Not my fault - she saw me at the beach on Maui! I did take the laptop and checked email and blogged a bit on genealogy but mostly about our pass. * I wrote 72 posts in August 2007 on Genea-Musings while I wrote 84 posts in July 2007 on Genea-Musings but I made 50 posts last year in August 2006 on Genea-Musings (I took a longer vacation!). So in the short-term I improved - fewer posts in August than July.* I am so far behind on my that I set at the beginning of the year. I undergo gone about monthly to the FHC and ordered microfilms of my Rhode Island ancestors defer records but I will not end that this year. I haven't been to the San Diego county probate office yet or completed my obtain citations but there is comfort measure. CVGS seems to be perking along as is the genealogy blog my own education efforts (although I only went to a local conference) and my presentations. And we took a trip to Hawaii. the article was titled The lead paragraph in the bind is about Katherine Holden of Connecticut who had a family tradition that a great-grandmother was a Native American and she had a DNA test for $250 that told her that she was 12% Native American.
