"Asymmetric cyber threat" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 03:13:29

By James A. Lyons Jr. November 13. 2007One asymmetric threat to our military forces and the nation is "cyber terrorism." Our advanced technologically based military forces dependent on our satellites critical infrastructure computers the Internet secure software programming computer-driven telecommunications air traffic control centers and other sophisticated sensor systems are tempting targets for cyber terrorism. Not only do we use our satellite and communication technology to support our military forces but it has also become a key link in all aspects of our complex economic society. Banking hold back of electrical grids stock markets telecommunications and a vast array of computer networks are part of our everyday life. Microprocessors and soon nanoprocessors undergo been built into our social fabric. The hold back mechanisms at our nuclear cater plants rely on performance analysis not by operators but by micro-processors. The flow of oil through thousands of miles of pipelines is adjusted by computers at valve sites remotely managed with communication systems vulnerable to interference and disruption. coerce switches often are controlled the same way. Experts have said 80 percent of successful intrusion into our government computer systems can be attributed to software errors or poor software quality. Many software products have poorly written or undergo poorly configured security features. Computers and networks without operating firewalls up-to-date virus and password protection are invitations for disasters. DHS computers were subjected to penetration by Chinese hackers because we failed to install and monitor the necessary "intrusion-detection systems."Compounding the problem offshore outsourcing provides a programmer overseas the chance to secretly insert a "Trojan Horse" or other trapdoor into a new software product. Oracle a major database software vendor and a supplier to U. S intelligence agencies has contracted for software development in India and China. It is to be noted that U. S agencies are not permitted to use unsupervised development of software from untrusted sources. Using untrusted software in critical commercial infrastructure is the major problem. Other countries that have received outsourced software work are Malaysia and Indonesia as well as possibly Pakistan. Russia. China and Israel. Software outsourcing is only part of the problem. The Chinese mega corporation Lenovo bought IBM PC's production unit. There.

"Man accused of cyber crime" posted by ~Ray

The investigation started with Cumberland County's cyber crimes assign force and wrapped up in Salisbury with an arrest. Members of the Cumberland County cyber crimes assign force were surfing a North Carolina converse room posing as minors. In July those investigators say a 47-year old man began chatting with their 14-year old decoy deputy. “During the cover of their investigation they identified a person here in our town that was doing an online chat of a very explicit sexual nature with a person who he presumed to be a 14-year old female,” said Salisbury Police Department’s Deputy Chief Steve Whitley. Police say the man. James Terry Hosch set up two meetings in Fayetteville with the assumed 14-year old girl but the man never showed either time. “The chat went back and forth and as it went back and forth it got more explicit more obscene if you will,” explained Whitley. Cumberland County investigators worked with Salisbury detectives who arrested Hosch at his job at the Innes Street McDonald's. Hosch’s co-workers didn't want to mention on the clutch. Hosch was charged with solicitation of a child by computer. Investigators say they seized elaborate and sophisticated computer equipment from Hosch's Fulton Street apartment. “Cumberland County will take back and essentially dissect it in examinations to see what all's on it,” said Whitley. They say they will be looking for more bear witness and possibly more victims through the computer examinations. A representative with the Cumberland County sheriff's office was not available for an converse on this investigation. Hosch is in the Cumberland County Detention bear on under a $25,000 dollar attach. He had a previous rush of obtaining property by false pretense on his criminal record.
