How to Home School children

 <modified>2007-12-09T14:38+00:00

In my last entry I mentioned that I would like to explore the legalities and specifics of domiciliate schooling a child. With 55,000 Florida students registered in home school programs I figure there has to be some sort of rules and regulations governing this write of education. I went to the Palm Beach County School come in for answers. First of all parents need to send a written letter of intent to the Superintendent of the school district the child lives in. Other parental responsibilities are to keep a portfolio of records containing educational activities writings worksheets and any other material used or created by the student. This information needs to be kept for 2 years and made available for inspection if requested by the superintendent. Since there is no attendance policy an annual educational evaluation of the student’s progress is required and the law provides 5 evaluation methods for parents to choose from. Since there are no express funds available to parents choosing to home school their children there is an depreciate. There are websites and other vendors that supply workbook and textbooks to parents. Students can also take courses from the Florida Virtual School. It is a public online school providing free courses to middle and high school students. This seems desire a good feature. It offers some sort of control and standardization over the child’s education. Again. I’m not real express emotion on this domiciliate school idea. domiciliate schooled students are eligible for Florida Bright Futures scholarships. They can take the general educational development (GED) evaluate and receive a GED diploma. Home schooled children have the same opportunities as public school kids to enter a community college or State University of their choice. As for extracurricular activities a domiciliate schooled child has the opportunity to participate. Even if the activity occurs during school time such as band or emit classes. The school govern offers the student to opportunity to register in that categorise. A evaluate point add up needs to be maintained just like the other public school kids. This ordain be agreed on by the principal of the school and the parent thru an evaluation affect. If a parent think their child has a learning disability the school district is obligated to evaluate the child. This evaluation is at no be to the parent. If the parent agrees that they cant properly compassionate for the childs needs at domiciliate the parent can register the child in public school. If the parents takes on the responsibility at home the school is not obligated but may furnish some choose of assistance for the child. Such as speech or language classes. I think there are some interesting aspect to domiciliate schooling. I comfort undergo no idea why anyone would be to go through all this affect. It seems that the parents work closer with the school district than I thought. I am not fond of the free for all write curriculum that parents furnish their students. It seems like they just “wing it” until the end of year evaluation comes around. What if their child is behind. I think at least the districts should observe the students develop more often than once a year!! That’s it for now :o)
Homeschooled high school senior + college applications = create transcripts. Michelle is lucky. Her freshman and sophomore year of high school were 1/3 to 1/2 Florida Virtual educate classes so she has those "official" transcripts. For her junior and senior years she has her dual enrollment SFCC "official" transcripts. Thank goodness. The idea of building transcripts seems daunting not because it's difficult but because it is time consuming. Time is the one thing we are in very short supply of around here. I'm very interested in. I evaluate they're a great model for a homeschooler creating transcripts. What do you evaluate? How are you handling transcripts?
I believe my sister built spreadsheets which my mom then used for our highschool years. They were designed specifically for the 4-year period so there was enough lay to mouth with. I don't bequeath how she did them though and the template was some obscure software which only my mom would use.
Is Virtual Schooling the Way to Go?

In the Orlando-based Florida Virtual educate. “students get their lessons online and communicate with their teachers and each other through converse rooms telecommunicate telephone and instant messaging.” The girl pictured above was getting D’s and F’s in a regular school. She claimed that she was not getting the attention she needed. After making the move to a virtual school she’s getting that individual attention and is now earning A’s and B’s. Opponents lay out that virtual schooling is detrimental to a child’s social development.
Sounds like apples and oranges comparisons to me since their example takes a girl out of a public school and drops her into a private one. Yeah it’s a virtual school but maybe she would undergo done exceed in a quality private school as come up. In any case. I evaluate that at least some socialization is a good idea lest we raise a generation of online introverts.
mention by morgan — September 14. 2007 @
It’s interesting that we assume virtual school equates to no socialization. Proper socialization requires time and effort just desire academics achievement must be purposefully pursued. evaluate of your “socialization” now that most of us work beat measure. What percentage of your social life involves exclusively the populate you bring home the bacon with? If parents act their child’s development serious enough to be involved in the selection of the school program they will probably also be involved in getting their kids out with other kids. (Yes not everyone will. Some populate are just bad parents)

Virtual Schools - a positioning challenge

 <modified>2007-10-23T16:57+00:00

I was reading a very interesting article about today for kids K-12. The bind covers topics such as how this type of environment is beneficial for kids that need more of a one-on-one learning environment (which virtual environments provide through the teachers use of: chat rooms e-mail telephone and instant messaging). This was interesting b/c as I’ve blogged before in my experience a virtual bring home the bacon environment has been a really great way for me to have a more flexible day where I can command personal tasks but also it’s been a great way for my employer to get more out of me than if I were strictly in the office. I work many more hours (it seems) since I can be checking and responding to my email as soon as I get up in the morning instead of getting ready for work and commuting; and. I am doing work related items much later than I would if I had been in the office. Plus. I have the opportunity to mow my lawn at noon if I need to. The bring home the bacon life fit has truly been rewarding and in return. I’m constantly “on” for my employer every day of the week. This is a challenge for many many employers to hold that their workers can be trustworthy and productive by providing this aim of independence - but it really is a great way to get more from your workforce if it’s an option. Now. I see that college courses are being taught in the same manner where students are not required to be in a real classroom and now the same scenario is happening in secondary schools. The contend here is positioning this write of learning environment to parents and educators that may not be familiar or comfortable with the concept of learning virtually and not in a traditional classroom. (I believe that there is a component of comfort and familiarity with the technology that drives this environment as well.) To be honest since my only academic undergo has been in a traditional classroom setting it would be hard to get my head around my kid taking school virtually…though I have the benefit of my work experience to draw from.
But what is the social acquire of that? What ordain happen to these children when they are only interacting with a computer? I know they’ll undergo friends from different sports and clubs but…
Maybe this calls for completely rethinking the way children are raised vs rethinking how they are educated. Our current school system educates intellectually and socially. (well. HA but you get my go…) Maybe if it were to move to just focus on intellect (a la virtual schooling) there would need to be completely different types of socialization for children…. Or maybe those school people already undergo that aspect sorted out!
I don’t know. As a virtual worker myself i do definitely see the benefits to work-life fit as an adult but god how I would undergo missed out on a lot if I’d not had the social move of school.
