VMware has released its first embedded hypervisor. The new ESX Server 3i runs directly on the server's hardware (refered to as 'bare iron') without requiring an operating system. Users run their virtual machines directly on this software. Virtualisation users previously had to install their own operating system and install virtualisation software on top of that. Measuring only 32MB the embedded hypervisor is 90 per cent smaller than the average operating system and virtual forge combination. VMware claimed. Its smaller footprint renders it more obtain and more shelter than mainstream operating systems which furnish many features that are needless to the average user. VMware chief executive Diane Greene argued in her opening set at VMworld in San Francisco.
