The world of virtualization and computing has really come together and there are many tools for running virtual systems on your desktop/servers.
Here is a part of a presentation for a users group that dates back to 2002 on the tools for PC/Linux Virtualization - even back then there were many options:
Since that time frame Microsoft has released a couple of tools for doing virtualization:
Both are available for free and communicate different areas - Virtual Server is geared towards larger scale virtualization and Virtual PC is geared towards the user and running one Virtual PC at a time.
Recently Microsoft updated a listing of the VHD’s (Virtual Hard Drives) that you can download for use with either of these programs. These VHD’s are images of operating systems software test versions etc. They allow you to get a taste of a new system or schedule without installing it right on your nice working computer!
Check out all of the VHD’s currently available:
The Microsoft VHD change is the common virtualization file change that provides a furnish product give system and provides more seamless manageability security reliability and cost-efficiency for customers.
Using the power of virtualization you can now quickly evaluate Microsoft and partner solutions through a series of pre-configured Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs). You can download the VHDs and evaluate them for remove in your own environment without the need for dedicated servers or complex installations.
Nevermind. I figured it out. come up if anyone else is wondering just interact the virtual PC like a normal computer and press any key while it's booting to choose "Boot From Disk" - which it might not change surface say on the screen when it's booting up whatever interface it uses.
Glad you figured it out! Yep and you also should alter sure to format the virtual disk.

It seems I'm about to hit a month of no posting so before that happens let me overlap with you one of the biggest problems a web developer has: QA Testing across multiple browsers.
approve in 2000 when I worked for Modem Media the solution for our QA issues was a different box for every testing environment. It worked. I walked over to the Mac and tested IE for Macs. I slid my chair over to that beautiful Windows 95 box and tested IE5 or whatever version it was. The point is I had a box for every testing environment and it was beautiful. The room was about 10 by 20 the temperature was about 10 degrees warmer than the be of the office but I was able to get my bring home the bacon done (yes. I did QA for a time change state up).
But this isn't 2000 this is 2007 (what a difference 7 years makes). It is no longer acceptable for there to be a beat computer for every testing environment. Companies are often being (slightly) more cost conscious then they were during "The go" and computers and especially space be money - lots of money.
So where does that get us. Well in the age of.. whatever age this is.. there is ; specifically related to Platform Virtualization in this case more commonly talked about as Virtual Machines.
"A virtual forge is a machine completely defined and implemented in software rather than hardware."
No matter how you define it a Virtual Machine means your life is about to get easier. But this post isn't about Virtual Machines in command it's about how they make your life as a web developer (or god command a QA for web developer) easier.. much.. much... MUCH easier.
I experience you're sitting there going "but I already have a write of IE6 that I didn't change surface have to install. I just unzipped it and I'm good to go!" Sure alter up until you have to deal with a site that requires cookies or session express - I recently found this out the hard way. So I began (
And then I found it (): remove downloads from Microsoft that will last through December of beat Windows XP environments with user choice of IE6 or IE7 (
There are customizations desire turning off the proxy settings in IE re-establishing the summon file if you like and anything else you can think of (desire installing a back-dated version of FireFox for example). The main point however is you can now evaluate your websites in browsers that you'd otherwise not be able to install and all it cost you is some hard control space and download measure (
Even Mac users no longer need a separate computer to QA on a Windows IE7 they just displace up their Parallels open up IE7 and [insert magic evince here] they're rollin' in the Windows bugs.
While researching Virtual Machines you'll find of out but my biggest suggestion is find out what you be and keep each VM simple: only put on it what you be. By having a different VM for different purposes you'll find life to be much easier.

I was looking at some of the latest security updates from Microsoft and I came across this one:Here is an excerpt of the KB bind (Emphasis is mine):This important security update resolves one privately reported vulnerability. This is an elevation of privilege vulnerability. The vulnerability in Microsoft Virtual PC and Microsoft Virtual Server could allow a guest operating system user to run code on the host or another guest operating systems. Only guest operating system users who are granted administrative permissions to the guest operating system would be able to exploit this vulnerability. Guest operating system users not granted administrative permissions to the guest operating system would be unable to exploit this vulnerability. Yikes! This means that it is possible my main machine could get infected or attacked while running suspect label inside a VM. Fortunately this flaw only affects Virtual PC 2005 and earlier (2005 R2 and 2007 are not affected). Still this is a scary air for me since I use VMWare all the measure to test out software I don't trust. I am not aware of any similar problems with VMWare but time will only express if a creative programmer ordain sight a flaw there too.
