Now that. I’m going to order a new Macbook. Sorry PowerBook G4 you’ve served me well for many years but its time for an upgrade.
As move of the upgrade. I took a quick inventory of the applications I use. In addition to the built-in apps such as communicate Book iCal. Mail and iTunes there are several applications that have become necessities for me. When the new Mac shows up. I’ll be busy downloading and installing these popular applications:
so I don’t think there is much to do there–other than act my Rails projects is nice when working on Rails but it no longer seems necessary since Terminal is tabbed now.
I’ve been using Microsoft Office X since I’ve had the PowerBook and undergo very few complaints about it. So. I’ll probably stick with MS Office rather than spend the extra $79 on Apple’s iWork. I’m less positive about the other Microsoft product I use regularly. Virtual PC. There are one or two applications I be to run that have no Mac equivalent. Using Virtual PC has always been painfully decrease for me. While Virtual PC will run better on a faster machine with more memory. Microsoft is no longer upgrading the product so I evaluate it is time to try something else. I’ll probably purchase or as a replacement.
This enumerate of applications was longer than expected and I’m sure I’ve missed a bring together. I’ll update this post when I sight out what those missing applications are. This will undoubtedly happen while I am franticly trying to end a task on the new computer without the proper tool installed.

An Apple a Day Doesn?t Have to Keep Articulate Away

For some years now I’ve been a Mac devotee. I’ve never missed having Windows because all the key business applications that I need are available for the Mac — e g.. Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Some like. Apple’s elegant answer to PowerPoint will even import presentations from PowerPoint and export Keynote slideshows as PowerPoint files so that others can believe and edit them.
All was well in my Apple Mac world until my business partner and I decided to broaden our portfolio of services to include rapid e-learning. From a business point of view e-learning seemed like a natural progression for us as much of our work involves producing bespoke leadership development materials such as distance learning workbooks for our clients. So. I started a desire and frustrating examine for e-learning software to run on my Mac. Despite the Mac’s unarguable pedigree in the world of graphic create by mental act there is a surprising dearth of user-friendly e-learning software out there for practitioners using Macs.
On my online travels I’d been reading rave reviews about and wanted to give it a try but it meant either borrowing or buying a PC with Windows. As a solution this seemed desire using a hammer to crack a proverbial nut. There were of cover alternative options desire Microsoft’s (quickly discounted because of its sloth-like performance) or which lets you lay and run Windows natively on an Intel-based Mac. However it means booting directly into Windows during which measure the Mac operating system isn’t accessible. If you want to use Mac OS X you’ve got no choice but to resuscitate.
And then along came followed by and now. Both Parallels and Fusion are Windows emulators: they use virtualization technology to accept you to run Windows as a virtual machine alongside the Mac operating system as you can see from the screenshot below:
CrossOver Mac adopts a different approach and builds on the open-source implementation of the Windows API that makes it possible for computers running Unix-based operating systems (like Mac OS X and Linux) to run Windows applications “natively.”
As a business we opted for Parallels — not because we thought it was better but because it was available when we needed it. It’s also great value at just $79.99 and much cheaper than buying a new PC!
Now before I start talking about getting started with Parallels you’ll need a licensed copy of Windows as Parallels does not come bundled with any operating systems pre-installed. However it supports more operating systems than you could possibly create by mental act including all the versions of Windows supported by Articulate. You’ll also need an Intel-based Mac (Parallels ordain not bring home the bacon on a PowerPC) running OS X Tiger 10.4 or higher a minimum of 512 MB RAM. 70 MB of hard drive lay for installation of Parallels Desktop plus sufficient space for the virtual machine you plan to install. More detailed system requirements can be open.
Installation is pretty straightforward. Basically it’s a case of opening the disk visualise (assuming you downloaded Parallels) double-clicking the lay Parallels Desktop icon and following the installation instructions which will be familiar to most Mac users.
Follow the onscreen instructions and insert your Windows installation CD or DVD when prompted. When Windows has been installed the OS Installation Assistant should finally install Parallels Tools in your new virtual forge. You’re now create from raw material to start installing your favourite Windows applications just as you would on a conventional PC.
Launching Windows XP on the Mac is as simple as clicking on the Parallels Desktop icon in the come in. You can also create shortcuts in the Dock so that when you click on say. Parallels will open Windows and then Quizmaker automatically. A nice user-friendly touch!
If you’re wondering about my set-up. I’m currently running Parallels Desktop with Windows XP on a 20-inch all-in-one iMac sporting a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor. 1 GB memory and a 240 GB hard disk. This isn’t the fastest or most powerful Mac on the block but it isn’t the slowest either. I’m not going to pretend that running Windows applications using Parallels is as abstain as running Mac applications natively on my iMac but it’s no droop. Nor has it let me down. Installing and was a blow and I’ve been using all three without problem for about nine months now to create some great interactive presentations.
What I usually do is create my skeleton presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac (or Keynote if I want a snazzier look) and then drag the file from the desktop of my Mac into Windows XP running in Parallels on the same forge. In many respects I guess I undergo the beat of both worlds with this set-up but I would comfort prefer to run a native Mac version of furnish software if I had the chance.
For those of you who’re comfort not sure about whether to act the plunge you can download a fully functional write of Parallels.
Virtual PC won't bring home the bacon on Intel machines. Only PPC. Intel machines should use Parallels or VMWare

adjust but it's the only way to run Windows on a G4 or G5. BTW. VPC 7 is only recommendable for the G5. If you have a G4 try to obtain VPC 6 as it will run better. It's that VPC 6 cannot run on the G5 that you need VPC 7 for them. VPC is software emulation: get x86 binaries to bring home the bacon via some sort of clever "translation" software on a PPC takes time.. i e it wil act slowly. If you undergo an Intel Mac get Parallels or VMware as mentioned above. This software uses the "virtualisation" technique available on the Intels in the newer Macs. As this doesn't emulate but speaks the same "x86 language" the software running on Windows in either VMware or Parallels wil perform super abstain. Natively abstain change surface!
__________________draw and Drop for Windows users:DRAG your peecee off your desk and DROP it in the cast aside.
Back in the day another option was to outright buy a cheap PC box put it on the communicate and then use Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Connection to connect to it from your Mac. Obviously this isn't the beat solution but it's faster than Virtual PC.

Some time ago I got my hands on a write of Filezilla that was a nightly build that worked on the Mac. Being a nightly create however meant dealing with an unofficial release that was buggy.
When they announced that Filezilla 3.0 had been released. I fired on the Windows machine to transfer it. Once the clean settled (it’s been a while since XP has run in anything other that the virtual comprehend) I was liking me some new Filezilla.
I checked to see if a Mac version was available and found the create server to be down. I sighed and forgot about it.
I checked a few days later to no apply but today lo and behold it works!
So analyse me out runnin’ Filezilla on the Mac. And it looks and acts just desire the PC counterpart save for the fact that the transfer is 12 megs for Mac and only 2.6 for the PC (or thereabouts).
Either way you can download Filezilla. Of cover it’s available for all PC. Mac and Linux.

Hey guys. I'm brand new to Mac land and finding many difficulties. I found great amounts of help on the PC Guide and am hoping for as much here. I have a G4 which i'm running OS 9.2 on. I don't undergo enough memory or OSX to run Virtual PC 7. I've done some research and tried downloading several things for Virtual PC 5 and i'm getting nowhere. Apparently the application has a bug that won't let you verify the software. There's an update to fix this but I when I finally tracked it down. I can't get it to be recognized. It's an SMIL file and I construe somewhere that only OS X will construe it. On my PC it shows up as a Real Player document. I tried downloading bootlegs and various other write things all to no avail. No be what I get and i've tried versions 6 and 7 too just in case the Mac refuses to accept the file. It says something desire it doesn't know the application which created the file. Is there a version of Virtual PC 5.0.4 that I can get my hands on somewhere cause I can't sight one anywhere. My PC recently got fried in an electrical storm and I got lots of files and programs I still need to use. In theory this should bring home the bacon out great for me. I just can't get the roll rolling. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.-Steel
SMIL means synchronized multimedia integration language. SMILs usually are RealPlayer files. The Mac's invisible desktop file that keeps track of applications and their documents might be rebuilding to connect the file to the proper application. In all likelihood the register is compressed with Stuffit and you need to decompress it with Stuffit Expander. To rebuild the desktop start the Mac while holding drink the dominate and Option keys until a communicate appears asking whether you be to rebuild the desktop. Click on yes. If that doesn't fix it try to change state the file despite it's SMIL label with the free Stuffit Expander for OS 9. Drag the problem file to the Expander icon or go away Expander with a double-click then go to change state in the menu bar and navigate to the register. If you don't have Stuffit Expander be for it at versiontracker com macupdate com or lowendmac com. When searching for it click on the Mac Classic sections of those sites not OS X's.
