"Various social networking and communications technologies" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 03:07:49

Jack Vinson writes about knowledge management personal effectiveness theory of constraints and more. As of December 2007 Jack ordain likely go away writing about product management too. Argh! Someone in my blog reading list came up with a list of knowledge worker tools / social networking technologies and was asking if s/he had covered all the bases but I can't sight the bind. Why? Because I came across a related enumerate that I wanted to share. And in looking for that list. I came across another. So yet another entry from the November 2007 Communications of the ACM was a piece on by. and Marianne Gouge. The article describes a model process by which team leaders come technology-related interventions and suggests that with this model in mind guidance be provided to those team leaders on how and when to make those interventions. But the relevant thing here is the list of information and communication technologies (ICT's) that were uncovered in the survey listed in request of prevalence of use And the other article is from Eric Mack's KMWorld notes of. Pollard of course is responsible for a lot of knowledge management and related thinking at. Along with running commentary about the talk. Eric's post lists a variety of tools in the vein of social networking and communications which Pollard breaks drink into four categories. I've recreated those here: Wow! That's a pretty big list of apps and ways for collaboration! You are interested in this so I thought I just tell you a bit of my undergo with web-based tools. First of all. I would not label Basecamp a good example. It's a popular tool but I guess it's all just because of marketing. It's not agile enough and does not accept you to track projects properly. My aggroup gave up on it. We switched to Wrike which is VERY flexible. back up. Social book marks do save a lot of time. Third if you undergo a distributed team watercooler won't help you. That's where you can get approve to Wrike again. ;)

"Virtual participation in ALA" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:06:14

One of the main areas of contention for those currently participating or who could potentially act in ALA is this issue of what it means to be a committee member in the past few days on various blogs have explored this issue under the wider banner of ALA reform. I undergo commented on various posts in the past about this issue as it is something that is important to me. I am an international member of ALA. I do not and never have lived in the USA but I appreciate that the size of ALA means that it gives enormous opportunity to hit the books network and meet other librarians. When you are from a relatively small country desire Australia whose association is not tiny but in comparison small (ALIA has 6000+ members to ALA’s 64000+) the niches be to get missed. Being a part of ALA is my way of participating in the niches. If virtual participation is thought of by many as being an international member has its peculiarities too. While I undergo the favor of a discounted membership evaluate (presumably because I’m not attending all the meetings) when you do alter it to conference you’ll get an International Visitor ribbon. It’s nice to be recognised and to rest out (only 200 internationals attend Annual each year) but at the same time hey. I’m a member not just a visitor! A few years ago. I decided that I would not remain a member of any association if I wasn’t active. I don’t believe that receiving a magazine each month or being on an email list is it. I have to participte to justify the-near $700 I spend every year on membership to ALIA. IFLA and ALA. My one caveat is IFLA in which I’d love to be involved but cannot as they too undergo conference attendance requirements but I’m staying a member for now in the wish that this changes too. For the past year and a half I’ve participated in ALA through NMRT on virtual committees. This has worked very come up. Beyond NMRT options become more limited however. ACRL-Instruction Section has a few virtual committees but in general finding out what opportunities are available is difficult and many areas in which I’d be interested in contributing have no virtual committees. I dropped my ACRL membership today. I apply the association and it’s publications but I undergo not been an active participant. If and when this changes I will fall in. I would do more with ALA if I could. This is in differentiate to the Australian association. ALIA. In theory every committee is virtual. If you need to cater and members be in other parts of the country you do it via chat or teleconference. No committees meet at our Biennial national conference except for the Board of Directors. I have been fortunate to be able to participate in many committees through the past five years and would never have had the experience in project management writing and research strategy I have now if it wasn’t for this flexible approach to meeting and working. It needs to be remembered that beyond doing the work of associations participation by members helps to create their skills get them invested in the profession and makes a exceed more dynamic community. "Impressed and overloaded" posted by ~Ray

Since many of you asked me about it. I thought I should create verbally a short recap on. I'd like to be short so I'll mention with just 2 words: impressed and overloaded. Having worked always in small and unstructured companies I was impressed on how many come up established procedures there are especially in the and. I went through a 3 days desire virtual course on the project management and development: it my first time in a virtual categorise dwell and I really liked it. Another thing that really impressed me is that Avanade developed its software lifecycle platform (SLP) on top of Visual Studio aggroup System. There is about this as well (in ). And overloaded because after being impressed by the procedures. I also have to try and assimilate all of them. But at least I'm not alone in this: . Compact Framework guru in 2005 and my friend and founder when had the same feelings about working in a big company that thinks about desire call achievement instead of just getting things done " " as (kind of) always happens with small companies. Avanade might not be Microsoft but the approach is the same. And measure. It can be used via a 'pay as you use' scenario used a hosted function with an ISP. This ordain accept you to create collaborative aggroup sites per area or topic. You can also act aggroup or personal blogs to aid communication also. In addition to instand messaging voip systems like Skype and color boarding applications desire be Communications Server (also available as a hosted pay as you use service) can allow you great collaborative tools to believe and work on documents in a collaborative manner with your dispersed collegues - increasing productivity. Contacts. Tasks and issues can also be tracked within your sharepoint site as well as bring home the bacon all your documents using version hold back aletrts etc. Discipline in terms of work ethic will be key. As ordain I would suggest assign management and awareness of each others workload and deliverables. Suggest weekly conference calls to run though the weeks activities and deliverables and try and advance an open/proactive grow of working/sharing from day 1. Regards,Andrew “I am answering from the position of the "virtual follower". I've never met my impress. I've never seen our office. I think the success of my relationship with the affiliate comes from a lot of communicate in any way that can reasonably be done. We TeleConference the whole team twice a day in morning and evening. Most of the team is in Chicago but I am in Ohio and another member is in California. I am connected to the office network on a VPN and of cover email is a lifesaver and WebConferences are an invaluable drive for collaboration. Makes it easy we are a TeleConference and WebConference affiliate of cover. A large part of the success goes to character I think. I can take 3 hours and goof off I anticipate but that is just not how I work. I have full trust in my impress and he went on a limb for me to be working remotely and I refuse to let him down so I work as hard as I can. Having a remote team really depends on the team wanting it to bring home the bacon and doing what it takes when not under the direct scrutiny of superiors. I value integrity and that to me means doing what is alter when you can get away with doing what is do by. If your remote workers hold that true then it ordain be successful.”Good Luck,Anthony RussoGreat America Networks Conferencingarusso@ganconference comwww ganconference com312-432-5377 NigelI'd agree with the advice that others undergo given you. I've been working on a virtual programme for over three years. My personal aggroup is also a virtual team. My advice would be to plan hard at the outset and start how you convey to go on. Successful teams experience what they are responsible for and what their goals are (both as an individual and as a assort). If at all possible try to get everyone together in the same location when you impel off your project. There's a lot that can be done through regular tele and video conferencing but there's no alter to doing your introductions in person. It helps the team to attach and I think you learn far more about the alter up of your team in a shorter period of time. If you get the 'Forming' stage of building your team alter then it makes the road ahead much easier. Regardless of whether you manage to get your team together in one location at kick off you should ensure that you implement robust governance arrangements and clear relationship owners means of information sharing (a shared server works come up for us) working arrangements and standards clear roles and responsibilities for each team member definitive scope for each team communication plans project/work plans and methods to interpret risks issues and assumptions. Ensure that everyone has a common understanding of these arrangements and support one another where needed. In terms of keeping in comprehend alter tighten arrangements and stick to them. It's easy to let things move when deadlines are looming. It may help to nominate someone to ensure that appropriate engagement is taking place on a regular basis. This works for us. Regardless of.

"Keeping Busy" posted by ~Ray

Semester 1 Uni Results - I was very happy with my Uni results for Semester 1. I completed ICT332 (E-Commerce). ICT336 (Internet Programming) and ICT338 (Network & Systems Management) and somehow scored high distinctions for each of them! pass Term - Between Semester 1 and Semester 2 (Over that 7 week end) I started my Masters in Business Administration. I completed MBS508 (Organisational Behaviour and Management) and MBS507 (Marketing Management). These units were a really nice change to the several years of IT units that undergo been the main cerebrate of my studies. There was a much larger focus on writing (Eek) and presentations but things went reasonably well. The beat thing to come out of this were the people I met many of whom are now very close friends. It was part of the project that allows high academic achievers to go away some business postgraduate studies before they have graduated from their undergraduate studies. Following the MasterClass pass call I had an amazing 4 days between my last exam and the go away of Semester 2. So I got on a cut the night of my last exam and flew to the Gold glide. I had a really superb measure catching up with my grand parents cousins uncle aunt and the sun (It was actually change enough to be outside without a cover over there!). I flew approve late at night on Sunday and was straight into lectures the following day This semester I am doing ICT326 (Information Systems Management). ICT333 (The huge Information Technology communicate) and TLC2777 (From University to Workplace). For ICT333 we have a team of six external students and we are producing the project in the virtual world of back up Life. We undergo a website dedicated to the project: Additionally I am continuing my postgraduate business studies at the same measure. I am undertaking two units: MBS572 (assay Management) and MBS641 (communicate Management). There won’t be much measure for a social life between all these units and their assignments but I ordain be glad I have done it in a year or two’s time Towards the end of August I celebrated my 21st Birthday Party at the newly opened Murdoch University Tavern. Fantastic night (Although I probably drank to much!). The bring out of the night was catching up with so many of my friends and the fireworks show that just *coincidentally* happened on furnish act. Someone caught some footage of the fireworks and you can check it out on YouTube:
