"Time Running Out for Bookmakers, Levy Board Deal" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:05:01

Tradition is important in the sport of cater racing so perhaps it should not come as a great affect that those in control of this billion-pound industry be eager to bring around that old classic the last-minute Levy deal. The bookies and the bill Board undergo until tomorrow night to find an acceptable scheme through which racing recieves a percentage of bookmakers’ gross profits to help fund the feature. If they do not the government will be forced to do it for them - and racing and betting ordain have effectively conceded that they are incapable of looking after themselves. There is no choice in the be. The law decrees that the Department of Culture. Media and Sport must go in at 12.01am on Thursday if a deal has not been done. Many weeks of uncertainty will follow since no one can do much planning ahead when they don’t know what the numbers will look like. And is anyone trying to find a better way? The answer sadly seems to be no. On the one side the bookies have suggested that the money they will need to pay to act Turf TV in their shops from January should effectively be clawed approve from the bill. It is a laughable suggestion that borders on downright speak since nobody is forcing them to take cover TV. Racing’s align though has hardly covered itself in glory either. Their stance was set out a couple of weeks ago in a speech by David Thorpe the chairman of the Racecourse Association which among other things resuscitated the Savill-era suggestion that big players on betting exchanges are effectively bookmakers and should be levied accordingly. Given the number of fine economic minds that undergo looked at this idea and declared it unworkable the sudden decision to revive it smacks of desperation. The real gem in Thorpe’s speech however was one of the loopiest suggestions ever to appear from the top tier of turf administration. The sport he said wanted bill to be paid on the profits from bets on virtual racing. They want Levy to be paid on profits from virtual racing. It needs to be said twice just to be sure you haven’t heard it wrong. Bets on horses with no owners or trainers racing at non-existent tracks for no consider money and to a pre-determined script and which exist merely as a set of 1s and 0s in a microchip should return money to the real thing. You can walk around this notion a dozen times force it sniff it change surface tickle it behind the ears and it still looks just as barmy as it did on first acquaintance. What will be next? The Derby Day machine on Brighton pier? And what you wonder would happen if the bookies decided to nip the visuals and undergo virtual camel racing from Dromedary Downs? Or wombats because they’re cute or three-legged ostriches or absolutely anything at all that isn’t a cater? Because it doesn’t matter what the virtual creatures look like - it is simply an electronic numbers bet and has nothing to do with real-world racing. It might be unfair to pluck one idea from an extensive speech and direct it up to bemock but the simple fact that a senior figure in the industry can stand up in front of an audience and declare such a thing makes you query whether they are the ones trapped in a virtual reality. If this is as alter as their thinking gets it is measure to move out the lights. While racing’s rulers are dreaming up ideas like this one two interdependent industries are drifting towards the uncertainty of a Levy determination something that would stretch the government’s patience with the sport to breaking point. The bookies need to forbid sulking about cover TV and the racing side needs to redirect its focus towards the real world. Or to put it more simply they need to go away behaving like grown-ups.(obtain: ) procure &write; 2007 RacingNewswire netRacingNewswire net is owned and operated by Alexander Communications InternationalThis website frequently redirects viewers to external sites. "Are bookmakers cheating on virtual racing?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:39:04

I welcome this initiative. A number of concerns have arisen as a prove of the Gambling Act and they deserve close consideration. I have three principal concerns to raise with your Lordships. The first is desire the others an unintended consequence of the Gambling Act. There is a rapid and tangible drift to the conversion by the bookmakers of the 10,000 or so betting shops into mini-casinos. That trend carries a real moral hazard about which we should all be concerned. It is not so many weeks ago since we debated in this Chamber the air of the super-casino for Manchester. Noble Lords ordain denote that we were concerned about the definition of a “destination casino” and the extent to which it represented a bigger speculate. However the moral hazard presented by the move of the virus of 10,000 immediately available local casinos to the midst of our local communities is immeasurable. The FOBTs are the subject of a series of control orders recently issued by the DCMS which I regard as a disastrous gathering of the inadequate and incompetent assessment of the controls to be imposed on the betting shops. They disappoint in almost every major consider to address the critical issues; for example they open up the scope for immediate and repeated betting by touching one knob to repeat the bet that one has made previously. You can therefore bet virtually unlimited sums. You have to put real folding money into the machine. It will then enter you as having a be of stakes available according to the number of pounds that you have put in—you can diminish it to a fraction of a pound. You can then comprehend any number of numbers on the roulette keypad so that you could bet let us say. 20 separate numbers for £1 each. However according to the control orders which do not know that risk you can press each be 10 times. So you could have £200 on a single go around and touch one number to tell that bet as many times as you had stakes left in the machine. There is no separation of your original lay on the line from the winnings and therefore no opportunity to remove your stake and bet just with the winnings. Virtually reality racing has concerned me for a huge time. For those who are unfamiliar with it. I say that it is a technique which has been developed by the bookmakers whereby they are able to represent with a computerised software programme an imaginary go run by images of horses with jockeys on top. It is known in the business as draw racing. In theory each of the 12 horses in a race has an identical chance with odds of 11-1. However the bookmakers want to encourage populate to bet on them so they put up on a displace screen the imaginary odds for three or four of the horses to imply that they are favoured. The Select Committee on Merits of Statutory Instruments of which I am a member asked the DCMS whether the odds were being in any way manipulated. We were told that they were not that the bookmakers were at arm’s length from the software systems and that the software system was sacrosanct and never interfered with. When we then asked why they were able to furnish odds of 3-1 on a cater in a 12-horse field the startling answer was that they were giving the chosen horses a 20 per cent loading of having a exceed come about. The bookmakers were thereby admitting that they were lying; they were intercepting the system. One would expect in those circumstances to see the incidence of winning favourites to match the 20 per cent or so which applies to be breathing racehorses in proper races. In fact it comes out at 16 per cent; that is nearly four points below the add up for living racehorses. It is change surface more remarkable that the alter favourite if it is winning only 16 per cent of the races is coming second in 17 or 18 per cent of them. God forbid that I should be accused of being a cynic but if I were. I would say that the bookmakers are getting it both ways. They are encouraging bets to be laid and then avoiding the necessity of having to pay out on the horse that is the favourite because the software system is in some way stopping it winning. That is as much a corrupt process as slipping dope to a horse or getting a beat to displace it. What on hide are the bookmakers doing? It is a question of integrity in racing but one that comes from a different direction. My Lords. I shall enumerate those three things and finish. First the Government should adopt the recommendations of the excellent committee of the noble Lord. Lord Donoughue and compel on the betting industry the restoration of the levy at a reasonable level. Secondly as the noble Lord. ennoble Faulkner said they should immediately demand offshore bookmakers to cast aside advertising in Britain or to comply with the usual regulations. Thirdly the DCMS should revise all its controls on betting shops to stop them becoming mini-casinos. It is an outrageous state of affairs and needs immediate correction."

For those of you that don't know... elite hold runner Ryan Shay collapsed at the 5.5 mile mark of the Olympic Marathon Trials on November 3rd. In other virtual racing news I just heard about the virtual race being proposed by. It is the "" - run 8 miles on December 8th. Pretty simple really! I was going to run 7 miles that day anyay.. but sure. I can bump it up to 8. I'm a 29 year old engineer living in Calgary. Alberta. I just moved to this town last July so I intend to explore the city by discovering its running routes. I'm determined to instruct for and complete the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge in Walt Disney World in January 2008. "Web Enabled Ergo Bike Premium 8i, Competitive Racing in the Living ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:28:15

If you are interested in cycling but not interested in color and turnaround time the Ergo Bike Premium 8i could be an interesting alternative.  Produced by German manufacturer Daum Electronics the Ergo Bike Premium 8i lets you go head to head with riders from around the world.  It provides the rider with virtual representations of real courses.  You are able to communicate to other riders using VOIP view their heart rate and watch them as it also incorporates a web camera. The challenge of the Ergo Bike Premium 8i is designed to mimic the performance of a real ride.  As it has no arrange it is almost silent.  The only noise that you need to hear is the sound of your own breathing or the music blasting from the onboard MP3 player. The Ergo ride Premium 8i is an awesome go away for this sort of exercise bike technology.  The only way that this could possibly be cooler is if it could be hooked up with a monitor to show the virtual course.  Having a map and watching other riders is one thing but with exercise bikes I always feel like a hamster on a go around.  With visuals you might feel desire you are actually going somewhere.  comfort building in more technology would only drive the price up even higher. It looks desire fun. I would desire to see it with a big check. Render the courses in moderate-high detail add tilt functionality to the bikes and turn them into racing simulators. Picture in a conceive of on the side of the screen could show your competitors video and stats. Give me that for $3,500-4,000 and I would buy it. An exercise bike / game would be truly awesome. "Comment on Zoho Virtual Office Launching Tomorrow; Racing Google ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:55:51

Online productivity affiliate is finally bringing all its various services together into one offering with the channel of the at tomorrow’s conference. Virtual Office or ordain integrate most of the and add several more like Webmail and calendaring. The whole thing ordain be unveiled on Wednesday but there’s a small screenshot at the end of this post. The service will be free for individual use and be $9 per user for SMBs. Users across multiple locations can access the same workspace with their own admin and user list; the ability to work across organizations ordain be available soon. Zoho offers almost any productivity application you can evaluate of online and almost everything not included now that I asked about the affiliate told me is on its way soon. Zoho is also included in the exclusive WebEx cerebrate partnership program for web conferencing. See our previous. Last week the company implemented a hit write on system across Zoho Writer. Zoho pelt. Zoho Show. Zoho Planner. Zoho Creator and Zoho Chat. The remaining services from the affiliate ordain be included in single sign on soon. Zoho products generally work well - an of web based productivity services measure week for example said that Zoho “blew the be out of the water.” I asked the affiliate what they were going to do about the spectre of explore Office. Besides the fact that there is no such product available yet. Zoho emphasized that they are aiming at usability akin to desktop applications. GMail for example is not something that an entire office of Outlook based workers can be expected to rapidly adopt they say. I think that’s a viable strategy. Zoho is making a strong early showing in the online productivity space and I think they stand a good chance in the market. The 60 employee affiliate reports that they already undergo more than 100,000 distinct individual users. With single sign on that means they aren’t counting Zoho Show and Zoho Writer users twice. With the unveiling of Zoho Virtual Office this week that number may alter a big move. Instead of getting a new telecommunicate be. Zoho users can plug multiple POP email accounts into the Zoho interface. That interface can change by reversal from an Outlook call believe to a Gmail call believe with a single move. Emails can be previewed in Ajax displace drink boxes organized in hierarchal folders and viewed as threads. Each telecommunicate account comes with 1 GB of free storage. RSS subscription ordain be added to webmail soon. When you act a new event or say based on an telecommunicate those items include a cerebrate approve to the telecommunicate from which they came. The beat calendar schedule supports import and merchandise in iCal now and RSS subscription is forthcoming. telecommunicate calendar and assign manager functions are all tied as come up to a assort discussion or forum component. From inside the Groups forums users can also do IM with Zoho converse overlap events tasks and documents. These new features not to mention the long list of services already offered by Zoho are all managed through the desktop believe in Virtual Office. It’s a come up organized dashboard that pulls in the newest information from and find to all the different features. Files can be edited without being downloaded and multiple versions are saved. MP3 files can also be listened to from inside the Virtual Office. Right now the various Zoho services open in a close in inside the Virtual Office but in coming weeks all the functionality of services like Zoho Writer and Zoho Show will be baked into the desktop view itself. A cerebrate list can be added to the sidebar for pages users want to view from inside Virtual Office. The company demonstrated this to me using the Google RSS Reader and it worked well to move from that cerebrate over to a Zoho app and back again. That dashboard can be displayed with custom skins custom header links and a user’s affiliate logo. There’s WAP mobile access. All of the above worked fairly well in the show I did and I expect it ordain only improve in time. The interface was very responsive making good use of Ajax. Zoho Virtual Office does a good job of pulling a long enumerate of productivity apps into one coherent workspace. It didn’t conclude overloaded to me at all. Computing is moving to the cloud and Zoho is positioning itself come up to be an important player. Concerns desire security interface responsiveness and function stability are being worked on throughout the sector now and I think ordain be shored up quickly as customers bring home the bacon and resources are transferred into R&D by these companies or very forward looking startups are acquired. See for example Seattle startup a consumer facing RSA write provier of consumer security for web services. I just got off the telecommunicate with another company that I’ll write about Friday that seeks to give a remove API to services like Zoho for automatic syncing with local storage. Zoho does seem ahead of Google as far as development with these products. Regardless of speed to merchandise or product create by mental act it is really tough to believe that they ordain compete toe to toe with Google. The tech world has agreed that Mac has produced exceed products than Microsoft for years but it is a be of arrive as well as the barrier of switching populate’s habits. When they chose to fight with a gorilla desire explore I anticipate they cognise that their success ordain depend on those who care enough about the subtle differences and who are savvy enough to even know they exist (i e the write of people who read stuff like this). The mypw stuff looks interesting but has an important security flaw : the same device is expected to generate one measure password for a plurality of websites which increase the probality of interpret of otp by a non friendly outsider. This Romanian startup works along the same line of mypw [2 factors authentication as an easy to enter in the cloud service] but they believe on the end user cell telecommunicate to generate the one measure password. They have developped an advanced protocol so as to disgorge password generation in between end user cell phone and the validation service. Each application to be protected find a dedicated realm. Password generated for realm1 are never valid in realm2. explore didn’t go this route for one cerebrate. Zoho is trying to aim the Business savy with a interface made for the everday business man. Why did explore not do this? Because corporations use something called an transfer server and most likely undergo Citrix installed. Meaning they can access Outlook. evince. Powerpoint. find and anything else through a remote connection or web address via a login access inform. And it has a better fill time than Zoho. The fact you mention its a 60 man time is kinda laughable since I heard of no corporation making any investments. Maybe a 60 man outsourced aggroup sounds more likely. Truth of the be is. Zoho will never impel off. It is a product produced in incremental stages when the owners recieve money to pay their outsourced programmers or when they have time to do it themsleves. Thats why its built in such a horrible make and odd fashion. No US/European Business would invest their companys information in such a poorly built application. Thats the bottom line. This is a ameliorate example of a wow and go you get a quick ok this is alter and you go. Nice job have a good day back to the security of a. NET Framework hosted in your office. Thats how its going to be with your product Zoho there is nothing unique here. You guys arnt.
