"Migrating primary virtual server first -- could kill subdomains?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 03:11:56

A displace where the Joyent community can gather help each other out and stay informed. Hi all -- if this is answered elsewhere please express me RTFM. On Barclay (FreeBSD shared) my personal domain "dunlop id au" is the primary virtual server. I was thinking I'd make it the first to move to my new shared accelerator since it only impacts me. There are however. 5 subdomains (5 sub virtual servers?) underneath this. If I move dunlop id au then alter the DNS change by reversal is that going to blackball find to the other domains? e g one of the subs is appliedmodel com au. If I move and switch dunlop id au to Girard then change the DNS will appliedmodel com au still be accessible on Barclay? VC200 #69 -- VCTWO -- Mixed GrillI'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity but why don't we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem understand itself? It's fine. You're not actually deleting anything (until you register a ticket asking them to shut off your be). You're just changing DNS settings. All your other virtual servers ordain act to be accessible.

"VMRCPlus 1.6 released" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:24:56

What is VMRCplus?VMRCplus is a tool for both configuration management of Virtual Server and remote hold back of virtual machines. It allows for local and remote management of Virtual Server and supports simultaneous management of up to 32 Virtual Server hosts. VMRCplus does not demand IIS to bring home the bacon Virtual Server. The first version that was available to the public was version 1.5. What is new in v1.6? As noted from :1. To reflect the terminology used in the web administration UI of Virtual Server the terminology of VMRCplus has been updated.2. VMRCplus now offers configuration of scripts on both the Virtual Server and Virtual forge aim. This was missing from the previous release.3. VMRCplus offers configuring promiscuous mode on the network so you can trace traffic in the virtual switch. This is something Virtual Server does not offer in the web administration UI.4. Minor enhancements desire storage of Console Manager coordinates conflict handling when a shortcut already exists (something Virtual Server fails to resolve).5. The COM and LPT port assignment logic has been fixed (most of it did not bring home the bacon).6. The x86 installer package no longer installs on x64. This has been done to prevent issues with 32-bit VMRCplus on 64-bit Virtual Server.7. Error handling has been enhanced and several issues have been fixed. You can grab the new release. Hint: I never touch the native Virtual Server interface anymore. I only use this.

"Support (Vault) :: Vault server in a virtualized environment" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 20:55:19

We're considering running Vault server in a virtualized environment (probably Microsoft Virtual Server). Has anyone had any experiences positive or negative in doing this? I run Vault in a VMware GSX server virtual machine and have had great success with it. This has been my configuration for the last bring together of years. (Currently both the guest and entertain operating systems are Windows 2003 Server.)However. I ordain note that my environment is probably not like yours as I am working as a single user. If you were likely to undergo any problems. I'd expect them to cerebrate to performance with large repositories and many users. (I'm not saying you will undergo problems only that those would be the areas I'd be mindful of.) My bound database back-up is currently about 250 MB which is hardly large and as a single user I'm not really taxing it that much. I ordain be interested in hearing if others are using this configuration and if they sight it successful. I've had lots of luck with VMware but it will depend heavily on what you are using the coat of the database and if it's on the same machine as the SQL server what else is running etc. VMware Workstation which is what I use has high amounts of overhead. When I get large databases in to put on those environments they can really get bogged drink. If I try to run more than 4 servers at once. I max my computer resources and my entire machine ordain fasten up. I experience VMware server has less overhead and directly accesses the hardware independently of the operating system it sits on whereas VMware Workstation goes through the operating system hosting it. Basically it can be done. You be to be careful in planning depending on what system you are using. You may need more computer resources for some virtual environments. I undergo a 2.6 gHz processor and 4 GB RAM. We do have some recommendations for getting the best bound performance that may help get the most out of your setup. "can't get first virtual server established" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:35:56

I posted this on the "accelerator" forum but I think this is probably where it belongs: After days of fiddling with my new Accelerator be ("small"). I have not yet succeeded in getting a virtual server to work. I be back up. Where I am: I have registered a domain. "sturdiesbay com" and pointed the DNS at my Joyent ip and figured out SSH and have a placekeeper page showing very nicely at. I have installed Ruby and Rails and Mongrel undergo configured mySQL and created and populated my tables and have my app running on mongrel at. It works. BUT everytime I try to anything with a virtual server my browser tells me it can't find the server. alter now I'm not even trying to get Apache to see mongrel; I've just created a evaluate server using (this time) the Webmin interface. It tells me I undergo a server called "atestserver sturdiesbay com" with admin user "testy". I undergo sftp'd an "index html" into /home/testy/web/public/ which Webmin tells me is my enter root. I undergo stopped and restarted Apache many times. But when I write into my browser with or without the www -- change surface when I copy the URL from the Webmin summon and attach it into the browser in inspect I mistyped -- the browser tells me it can't see the server. I furnish up. I am a stupid newby. I would be very grateful if someone has the time to inform to me the specific flavor of my stupidity. "sturdiesbay com" resolves to a Joyent IP communicate but "atestserver sturdiesbay com" doesn't end anywhere. So even if your Accelerator is configured to serve for that domain your DNS isn't setup to displace people there. You probably be to add a wildcard (* sturdiesbay com) A preserve to your DNS that points to your Accelerator IP. I answered you on your other affix and really where you posted the first measure is better since Accelerators are different from Shared... If I (using change surface -H "Host: atestserver sturdiesbay com" your_acc_ip) pass that entertain header to your accelerator. I do get a page approve that is similar but says "evaluate server" instead of "Future home of..." so it seems you'll be all set when your DNS points properly. @linda: Sorry. I missed the other affix and assumed it hadn't been answered. Many thanks. So I understand that what I need to do is change the config file at DynDNS which handles my DNS; the missing bit is there rather than at Joyent. Thanks again.
